Simultaneous Commercial Kitchen Refurbishment for Victorian Best Western Hotels 🏨👨🍳
Client Background: Family-Run Best Western Hotels in Canterbury, Folkestone & Eastbourne
Our client owns three historic Best Western hotels in Canterbury, Folkestone, and Eastbourne, and they wanted to keep their old charm while also improving their kitchens. Therefore, they needed modern, functional kitchens, but at the same time, they wanted to keep the heritage style. As a result, we needed to balance new technology with historic design.
Project Brief: Dual Kitchen Refurbishment with Careful Timing
The client wanted us to refurbish two hotel kitchens at the same time, so that both could finish around the same day. Consequently, careful scheduling was essential, and at the same time, temporary kitchens had to be arranged. In addition, we needed to ensure staff could continue preparing meals without delays. Moreover, we had to avoid disturbing guests during their stay.
Consultation & Planning: Working Closely with the Client
First, we met with Christian and Daniel from The Abbots Barton Hotel, and we also spoke with key hotel staff. During this time, we discussed designs, and at the same time, we planned the work schedule for both hotels. Then, we designed temporary kitchen areas so staff could keep serving meals. Meanwhile, we also planned safe routes for staff to move between kitchens and dining areas. Additionally, we carefully managed construction noise, so that guests would not be disturbed.
Abbots Barton Hotel: Solving Kitchen Layout Problems
At Abbots Barton, we first removed dividing walls to create a bigger, open kitchen. Then, we reversed the cookline and prep areas, which made workflow faster and smoother. In addition, we installed new floor gulleys and drainage to support the moved equipment. Therefore, the kitchen could now handle busy periods more easily, and staff could work safely and efficiently.
Safety & Scheduling: Keeping Guests and Staff Safe
Furthermore, staff used a temporary route to access the dining rooms, which required careful planning. Meanwhile, we carried out flooring work overnight, so that guests would not hear noise during the day. As a result, safety and service continued without interruption. In addition, we double-checked all temporary barriers to make sure the construction area was secure at all times.
Equipment & Finishing Touches: Modern, Reliable Solutions
Next, we installed Blue Seal and Rational cooking equipment, which made cooking faster and more reliable. At the same time, we updated the extraction systems and added hygienic wall cladding, which improved safety and cleanliness. Additionally, the finishes were carefully chosen to match the historic hotel style. Therefore, the kitchens became modern, safe, and visually appealing at the same time.
Project Outcome: Efficient Kitchens with Historic Charm
Finally, the refurbishment delivered kitchens that were highly functional, while also keeping the heritage look. At the same time, staff and guests experienced minimal disruption. In addition, the equipment and finishes reflected the hotels’ high standards. Therefore, the client now has modern, efficient kitchens that work well and still fit the character of their hotels.
