More about this project

The Turner Contemporary, which opened in 2011 and now a well-established landmark on Margate seafront has a very busy cafe with a kitchen in need of refurbishment and some re-design.

Working with the main contractor Redec Refurbishment and consultants Kendrick Hobbs we were contracted to carry out the full kitchen works and replacement of most appliances.

Once the strip out of old appliances had been completed we have a very strict two weeks to complete all of our works before the gallery re-opened at the end of January.
We first applied Upvc hygienic wall cladding to the old wall surfaces as a bright and easy to keep clean commercial kitchen material. We then latexed the old tiled floor and applied Altro stronghold 30 slip-resistant flooring.

With this done our next major task on the project was to build a walk-in a cold room – not a complex task in itself but the location of the remote condenser being some 30 meters away and nearly 20 meters up meant that a specialised remote unit had to be manhandled onto the roof. As pretty exposed to the elements but more importantly to sea air part of this unit received an anti-corrosion treatment.

With the complex cold room completed all that remained was to install cooking appliances, refrigerators, and a new dishwasher.
Special attention was given to using highly energy-efficient catering appliances that would discharge very little grease into the sewer system.

The completed kitchen now allows its team to work more efficiently with modern intelligent equipment.
