☕ Café Installation – Plumstead Library, London

Bringing a Heritage Landmark into the 21st Century

🏛️ Project Overview – Modern Café in a Historic Library

Plumstead Library is a Grade II listed Edwardian building in South East London. Therefore, it is full of history, and it needed careful attention during refurbishment. Meanwhile, the Royal Borough of Greenwich led a £16 million regeneration project with Osborne as the main contractor.

Consequently, the project included removing a 1930s extension to make way for flexible community space. In addition, the brief required a café that could serve library visitors, residents, and event guests. Similarly, the design had to fit the historic building while meeting modern café standards. Moreover, it needed to be practical for high-footfall use.

🔧 Our Role – Café Design & Installation

We were asked to design and install the full café. First, we created a front counter that was both practical and visually appealing. Next, we added a back-of-house kitchen for food prep, storage, and dishwashing. In addition, all areas were designed for durability, efficiency, and easy cleaning.

Furthermore, every element was carefully planned to integrate with the building’s architecture. Consequently, staff can work smoothly, and visitors enjoy a comfortable experience. Similarly, the layout supports both quick service and high standards of hygiene.

🍴 Front Counter & Beverage Station

The café counter is at the centre of the space. Therefore, we built a stainless steel frame with a white Corian top. In addition, it included a Victor hot plate for meals and a refrigerated display for drinks and snacks.

Meanwhile, behind the counter, we created a dedicated coffee and drinks station. In addition, Hoshizaki under-counter fridges and space for a Gaggia coffee machine were installed. Consequently, staff can prepare drinks and food efficiently. Moreover, the setup allows them to serve visitors quickly without disrupting workflow.

👨‍🍳 Back-of-House Prep & Storage

We installed a stainless steel prep sink to ensure hygiene. In addition, commercial fridges, freezers, and a dishwasher manage daily service. Moreover, dry storage shelves keep supplies organised and accessible.

Therefore, the back-of-house space works smoothly. Similarly, staff can prepare and store food efficiently. In addition, the layout makes it easy to maintain high standards for food safety.

🎯 Project Outcome – A Café for the Community

Delivered in January 2020, the café now welcomes library visitors, residents, and event guests. In addition, it offers hot and cold menu items in a practical and inviting space.

Moreover, the design blends modern café function with the library’s historic character. Consequently, the library has become a lively and inclusive community hub. Similarly, the café supports social interaction, learning, and community events. Ultimately, this space contributes to the library’s mission of bringing people together.
