More about this project
The Charles Dickens School is a co-educational secondary modern school located in Broadstairs in the English county of Kent. The school is named after Charles Dickens, the 19th-century writer and social critic.
We were invited to tender for refurbishing the schools food technology classroom with the school applying for s grant to be able to carry out the works and therefore working to a very strict budget. Without compromising on quality we provided a quote that satisfied the grant conditions and our quote documentation supported the school in their successful application.
As a summer holiday project we had the luxury of 6 weeks to carry out the works if needed and with the addition complications that Covid was producing we did not rush to complete, rather we worked safely and sensibly to ensure we were finished a week before the Aurum term start date.
Our design provided additional student workstations plus an adaptable workstation for use by a disabled student all able to clearly see and be seen by the teaching staff.
Lesson length had previously caused a problem where students would prepare their food but not have time to finish cooking by the end of the lesson – this was resolved by the inclusion of a Rational combi oven and washing up speeded up with a Maidaid dishwasher.
To encourage good hand hygiene a number of handwash basins were located in a new ‘lobby’ area, separated from the main classroom.
The improved hygiene theme was further improved by the use of Upvc hygienic wall cladding and new slip resistant vinyl flooring.
Each carefully designed stainless steel workstation gave each student their own gas hob and electric oven and shared use of a preparation sink.
