The brief

Community kitchen Margate: community kitchen given, not invoiced

A Perfect Place to Grow is a charitable community project in Margate, housed in a restored Victorian building — notably, one that once served as a mortuary and now forms part of an artists' community of which Tracey Emin is a benefactor. Consequently, Kent Commercial Kitchens designed and fitted the catering facility as a donation, giving time, materials and labour to the project.

Specifically, the aim was a working community kitchen the project could use day to day, delivered at no cost to the charity. Kent Commercial Kitchens donated the design, the extraction system, the flooring and the hygienic wall cladding, and several equipment manufacturers donated the catering equipment alongside. As a result, the work was carried out inside the restored building on a three-week programme.

What we did

Design, extraction and finishes, donated in full

Extraction system

To ensure compliance, Kent Commercial Kitchens designed and installed the extraction over the cooking line, sized for the equipment and the room — specifically so the kitchen could run safely and compliantly in daily community use.

Flooring and hygienic finishes

Additionally, safety flooring was laid and coved, and UPVC hygienic wall cladding was installed through the kitchen. These are hard-wearing, easy-clean finishes suited to a shared community space, with the time and materials donated.

Donated catering equipment

Furthermore, the catering equipment was donated by its manufacturers: a Rational combi oven, Control Induction induction cooking and Liebherr refrigeration. Furthermore, Kent Commercial Kitchens added Sammic food preparation to the donation and brought the whole kitchen together into a single working line.
