The brief

Walk-in cold room Kent: Cold storage for a conservation centre

The Big Cat Sanctuary in Smarden is a conservation facility caring for some of the world's most endangered big cats. Following our work at its sister site in Herefordshire, we were asked to provide specialist cold storage for a new Centre of Excellence.

The centre needed two large walk-in units, a 6m x 6m chiller and a 6m x 8m freezer, to safely store specialist food for more than 50 rare big cats with specific dietary needs. As a new-build project, it had to be coordinated with the construction team from an early stage so the cold rooms integrated cleanly into the wider facility.

What we did

A turnkey refrigeration install

Cold room and freezer construction

Full panel construction of both the chiller and freezer rooms using high-performance insulated panels for energy efficiency and stable temperature control, designed to meet strict hygiene and animal-welfare standards.

Refrigeration and commissioning

We installed all refrigeration pipework, controls and electrical connections using JE Hall evaporators and condensers, then carried out full system commissioning and performance testing so both rooms ran correctly from day one. EAIS nylon-coated wire racking and Altro Stronghold slip-resistant flooring completed the fit-out.

Delivered in a week, working alongside the site and construction teams throughout. A repeat instruction after our earlier work for the sanctuary's Herefordshire site.
