The brief
Care home kitchen installation: communal kitchen for sheltered housing
Cedarmore Housing Association supports elderly residents living independently. The kitchen was a satellite catering space used for afternoon teas, light meals and occasional dining in a communal room. It was clean but dated and domestic in style, and no longer met modern hygiene expectations.
Consequently, the client needed a practical, hygienic upgrade, but not a full heavy-duty commercial kitchen. The right answer was a kitchen that sat between domestic and commercial, durable enough for regular communal use without the cost or scale of a full stainless fit-out.
What we did
The right spec, not the biggest spec

Rather than push a full commercial kitchen the client did not need, we recommended a powder-coated steel kitchen, the balance between domestic appearance and commercial durability. It is stronger and longer-lasting than MDF or chipboard, resists moisture and wear, and suits a space in steady but not heavy use.
Moisture damage, dealt with properly
On strip-out, however, we found historic water damage from a previous leak, with saturated flooring and walls. We paused the works and brought in dehumidifiers to dry the area to a safe level before building, rather than covering the problem over.
Fit-out and finishes
Once the area was dry, we therefore fitted hygienic UPVC wall cladding and slip-resistant safety flooring, rewired and replaced the plumbing, assembled the powder-coated steel carcasses, and installed bespoke stainless steel worktops with integrated sinks before positioning the appliances.
Delivered in three weeks. Not every care or housing kitchen needs full stainless steel, and the value here was specifying the right kitchen for how the space is actually used.
