The brief

Community kitchen refurbishment: working kitchen for the whole village

In particular, Frittenden Memorial Hall is the social heart of a small rural Kent village — used by local clubs, community groups and residents throughout the week, and hired out to external caterers for larger events and functions. However, the existing kitchen was no longer fit for purpose: inadequate extraction, tired surfaces, and equipment that couldn't reliably support professional catering use.

Frittenden Parish Council commissioned a full refurbishment. Specifically, the brief was to produce a properly specified community kitchen — compliant, practical and durable enough for daily community use and capable of supporting external caterers working at volume. Furthermore, all works were to be completed with minimum disruption to the hall's regular programme.

What we did

A properly specified kitchen in 3 weeks

Extraction system

In particular, a community kitchen refurbishment in Kent for Frittenden.

First, a new Parry extraction canopy was installed over the cooking line — sized to the equipment load and the kitchen's footprint. Ductwork was routed and commissioned to current compliance requirements. Consequently, this replaces the inadequate original ventilation that had made professional catering use impractical.

Fire-rated roller shutter

Additionally, a fire-rated roller shutter was installed between the kitchen and the serving area — a requirement for a hall kitchen used by multiple hirers and external caterers. This provides the fire compartmentation needed for building compliance and insurance purposes.

Bespoke stainless steel fabrication

Furthermore, prep tables, sink run and serving counter were fabricated in-house at our Folkestone workshop to fit the kitchen's specific dimensions. Stainless steel was used throughout — durable, cleanable, and suited to a kitchen that sees multiple users and caterers across any given week.

Catering equipment

Moreover, a Lincat electric range oven was specified — reliable, straightforward to use for community hirers and capable enough for professional caterers. Gram refrigeration cabinets were added for compliant cold storage. As a result, equipment was specified to balance accessibility for casual users with the output requirements of event catering.

Hygienic finishes

Finally, Bioclad UPVC hygienic wall cladding was installed throughout — wipe-clean, durable, and EHO-compliant for a multi-user kitchen environment. Additionally, Altro slip-resistant vinyl flooring was laid and coved at all wall junctions. The serving hatch was also finished to match.

Equipment specified

Practical, compliant, multi-user

  • Lincat electric range oven — main cooking appliance
  • Gram refrigeration cabinets — compliant cold storage
  • Parry extraction canopy — cooking line ventilation
  • Bioclad UPVC hygienic wall cladding — full kitchen coverage
  • Altro slip-resistant vinyl flooring — coved finish throughout
  • Fire-rated roller shutter — kitchen to serving area
  • Bespoke stainless steel — prep tables, sink run, serving counter

The outcome

Ready for daily use and event catering

Overall, all works were completed within the 3-week programme with minimum disruption to the hall. As a result, the refurbished kitchen gives Frittenden Memorial Hall a properly compliant, multi-user facility — practical enough for everyday community hirers, specified well enough for external caterers working at event volume. In conclusion, this was commissioned by Frittenden Parish Council as a direct appointment.

Overall, this project demonstrates KCK's approach to community kitchen work. Furthermore, quality is maintained throughout every stage. In addition, the finished kitchen meets all relevant hygiene and safety standards. Therefore, the hall can accept professional caterers with confidence. Moreover, the new extraction and fire compartmentation ensure full regulatory compliance. Consequently, Frittenden Memorial Hall now has a kitchen that genuinely serves the whole community.
