The brief
Food Technology Classroom Installation: From domestic kitchen to teaching kitchen in a week
Enterprise Learning Alliance is a Kent County Council organisation supporting young people and schools across South East Kent — providing vocational learning opportunities alongside core academic subjects. At their Westwood Centre in Margate, an outdated domestic-style kitchen was limiting what could be taught in food technology sessions.
The brief was to strip out the old MDF domestic units and replace them with a properly specified, semi-commercial food technology classroom — hygienic surfaces, commercial-grade equipment and a layout that gave students a realistic introduction to a professional kitchen environment. This was the third project we had delivered for Enterprise Learning Alliance. Programme: one week over half-term, with the room back in use the following Monday morning.
What we did
Strip-out to classroom-ready in 1 week
Strip-out and preparation
A Food Technology Classroom Installation for Margate.
Existing domestic MDF kitchen units fully removed on day one — cleared by mid-morning to allow the rest of the programme to run on schedule. Structural preparation and making good completed before installation began.
Extraction and hygienic wall cladding
New extraction canopy installed to meet ventilation and hygiene standards for a food preparation environment. Bioclad UPVC hygienic wall cladding applied to all wall surfaces — durable, wipe-clean and appropriate for a teaching kitchen operating under EHO inspection. Plumbing and electrical works carried out to bring all services in line with the new layout.
Stainless steel fabrication and appliance installation
Stainless steel counters and prep surfaces delivered and fitted on the final day. Parry electric ranges installed as the primary cooking equipment — appropriate for a teaching kitchen where student safety and ease of use are paramount. Maidaid dishwasher and Hoshizaki refrigeration installed to complete the working kitchen.
