A Bright and Clean Upgrade for a Local Care Home

🏘️ About Balgowan House

Balgowan House sits close to Saltwood Village Green, and therefore it has a calm and homely feel. The building first started as a family home over 100 years ago, but later it became a care home. Even with these changes, it still feels warm and family-like, so both residents and visitors enjoy being there.

🔧 Project Brief – From Domestic to Strong

The care home needed a stronger and cleaner wash-up room, so we were asked to replace the old domestic dishwasher area. Because of this, we planned a full upgrade, and then we created a space that is durable, safe, and easy to clean.

Our work included:

• First, we removed the old domestic kitchen setup, and then we cleared the space.

• Next, we fitted stainless steel commercial units, so that the area became more durable.

• After that, we added a pass-through dishwasher system, which meant faster and easier washing.

• Finally, we installed wall cladding and slip-safe flooring, so the whole room stayed hygienic.

⏳ Covid Delays & Tight Timeline

This project was first planned for March 2020, but then Covid rules caused delays. Since resident safety came first, work could not start until July 2020, and so we had to quickly adjust our schedule. Once safety steps were agreed, we could begin, and therefore we had only five days to finish.

Because of this short window, we started at 8:00am on Monday, and then we worked each day until handover on Friday. In the end, we finished with just one hour to spare, so the deadline was met. At the same time, our team followed strict Covid rules, and therefore the job was safe and smooth.

🚿 The Result – Clean, Safe, and Easy to Use

The finished wash-up room is bright, strong, and easy to keep clean, so it now helps staff every day. The new pass-through dishwasher:

• First, it speeds up washing after meals, and so staff save time.

• Next, it is simple for staff to use, so that training is quick.

• Finally, it fits well into the daily routine of the home, and therefore it makes work smoother.

This project was small in size, but still it had no room for mistakes. Because of the short timeline, live care setting, and Covid rules, we had to work with care at every step, and as a result we delivered on time. The upgrade now helps staff spend less time cleaning, and instead they can spend more time caring for residents.
